HISTORY

ANZ BANK FOOTBALL CLUB

ALBERT PARK FOOTBALL CLUB

1954 ANZ BANK FOOTBALL CLUB (Zedders) ESTABLISHED

It was a formidable challenge to form a football team from scratch, in days when bank staff worked Saturday mornings, few owned cars and player facilities such as hot water, trainers etc were unavailable. Very few of these inaugural members could have foreseen a future spanning more than 50 years from such humble beginnings

Reserves team defeated Brunswick to win The Club’s first premiership

1969 ES&A BANK FOOTBALL CLUB DISOLVED AND

JOINED WITH ANZ BANK FOOTBALL CLUB

Following the merger of ES&A Bank with the ANZ Bank, the ES&A

Football Club dissolved with players, committee and supporters invited

and encouraged to join the ANZ Bank Football Club. The influx of players was not as great as hoped for, although some excellent players such as Jim Kelly did join the ranks at a time when there was difficulty for both the ES&A Bank and ANZ Bank teams fielding teams each week.

1974 ANZ BANK FOOTBALL CLUB WINS SECOND PREMIERSHIP

Reserves team defeated Old Geelong Grammarians to win The Club’s second premiership

1996 ANZ BANK FOOTBALL CLUB CHANGED NAME TO ANZ BANK/ALBERT PARK FOOTBALL CLUB (Rats)

Due to the increasing problems in fielding two sides each week, and the increasing interest from the local community, the very difficult and progressive decision to incorporate Albert Park into the name and structure of the ANZ Bank Football Club was taken.

1999 ANZ BANK/ALBERT PARK CHANGED ITS NAME TO ALBERT PARK FOOTBALL CLUB (Falcons)

The increasing interest from the local community and diminishing interest and support from the ANZ Bank and the ANZ Bank Social Club resulted in the imminent change of name to Albert Park Football Club. Kevin Mitchell, the ANZ Bank Social Club Secretary, and ardent supporter of all the ANZ Bank sporting clubs over many years had recently retired from the ANZ Bank and his drive and enthusiasm, so greatly appreciated in his role as the ANZ Bank Social Club Secretary, was missed by The Club.

President Bryan Bennett was a major force in the ‘rebirth’ of the club, returning it to a strength, both on and off the field, not seen for many years. Under Bryan’s leadership The Club has retained and encouraged the ANZ Bank past and present links, whilst fostering local support, which has continued to increase.

LIFE MEMBERS

Life membership provides the Football Club with an opportunity to recognise, and thank, those members who have gone ‘beyond the call of duty’ in their capacity of Player, Committee or Supporter over a sustained period of time. Each and every one of the following people have willingly given a significant part of their life for their love of the sport, ‘The Club’ and the comradeship that clubs such as ours provide.

W Keith Findlay 1960/80’s. Secretary for 10 years. Introduced and ran a Little Tatts competition  through ANZ branches for many years in the 1960/1970’s.  The Club was left in an excellent financial position through his efforts

Mrs Bev Jackson Wife of ‘Jet’. A tireless worker in canteen at social functions etc etc for 30 plus years

W (Jet) E Jackson 1960/80’s. Played around 350 games (Record as at 2004) mainly on wing due to great speed.  Tireless worker. President (5yrs), Reserves Capt/Coach and supporter. Involved in documenting Club History

Bruce D Robertson 1960/70’s. Excellent administrator and with K Findlay worked the club into a strong financial & admin position.  Some excellent on field success resulted from his efforts. Gave items for  trophy cabinet and club history

Rex McNamara 1960/70’s. Masseur/Trainer for many years with his good mate and first aid extraordinaire Noel Adams. Great team and very well respected and liked. Both loved a party/beer

N (Birdie) G Pearson 1960 to present (2004) as player and supporter (over 250 games, mainly full back). Captain and reserves Coach, Committee, President and a principal contributor in the production of the Club History. Loves a party

Alan D Heaney 1960/90’s. A great supporter loved by all. Never missed a match for years

Harry E Birkenfelds 1970/80’s. Full Fwd, Reserves Captain and Best and Fairest, President. A tireless and popular worker who had his whole family involved. Children ran boundary. Wife Karen canteen etc etc.

Steve F May 1970/80’s. Skilful rover who played and worked on committee for several years. Elusive and good goal sneak

Pat L Harper Around 1970’s. Quite a character who was a very elusive, effective and good ball getter.

Kevin F Wescott 1970/80’s.  Good solid rover. Team player.  A nice bloke who was popular as player & Secretary.

Tom J Brain 1980/90’s. Handy forward. Great worker and administrator and with wife Linda formed the    backbone of committee, social & canteen for many years. Went on to senior position with VAFA

Michael Szeitz 1980/90’s. A very solid player as ruck or full forward. Many years of excellent service and gave his best at all times

1954 Section “E”

Finished 9^th of 10 Teams, winning 3 and losing 13 games

The Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) established a new grade “E”.

Sports minded officers at ANZ Bank Head Office 394 Collins Street Branch of the ANZ Bank banded together to form a founding committee, who negotiated a place in the 10 team competition for an ANZ Bank team. Many players were returned Service-men from World War 2, with a fair sprinkling of enthusiastic youngsters. The home ground was at Yarra Bend Fairfield (Olney Oval) Melway Map 2D. Facilities were primitive, showers were cold and there was no power in the changing sheds. Training was conducted at (what was then) Wright Street Oval Albert Park, which is now the Golf Driving Range.

Few of the younger players owned a car, those that could not cadge a ride had a

‘red-rattler’ train ride to Clifton Hill and a bus ride or a long walk.

Many of those who met after Saturday morning work for the trip to Fairfield would rendezvous at Phairs Hotel, Collins Street, a popular bankers watering hole. After a 20 goal first round win, the season was very poor. Another two wins was all that could be managed.

1955 Section “E”

Finished 9^th of 10 Teams, winning 2 and losing 16 games

This year saw the same home ground at Yarra Bend Fairfield with training arrangements at an oval in Batman Avenue, next to the Artillery Depot on grounds used in 2003 by Melbourne Storm Rugby Club. The club was able to access the army depot for team meetings, selections etc when the change rooms had no lights. The club experienced similar lack of on field success, despite the efforts of the same committee to persuade footballers working at ANZ to join the Bank Team.

However, a few talented young players joined the club, who were to provide a solid nucleus for future development. These included Peter Treleaven, Graham Holt, Kevin Sharp and Alex Cameron. There were times towards the end of the season when older players decided to ‘hang up their boots’ and the club battled to field a side.

1956 Section “E”

Finished 10^th of 10 Teams, winning 2 and losing 17 games

During summer months the founding committee decided there was no future for an ANZ Bank team and all stood down. Two Annual General Meetings failed to form a committee but at a third meeting Keith Metcalf (whose football experience was minimal) took on the job as President, with most other committee functions being performed by the players.

Frank Lyons (one of the ‘originals’ from 1954) was elected Captain-Coach, in an honorary capacity.

Yarra Bend was seen as a most unsatisfactory home ground. The then Secretary of the ANZ Bank Staff Social Club, J M (Jack Hodges), who was a trustee of Caulfield Park pulled a few strings to get the club a use of an oval there for home games. Training was at Princess Park Carlton next to the Carlton FC. Changing facilities were shared with other teams from near and far.

Before each home game player/committeemen were rostered to mark out the ground boundaries. A machine for this purpose was stored at the nearby home of Mrs Hellard, mother of Dick Hellard an ANZ banker and a VAFA umpire for many years.

On field success was very limited but the club had survived, essentially as a group of players operating on a shoe string budget and with the enthusiastic support from President Keith Metcalf.

1957 Section “E”

Finished 6^th of 10 Teams, winning 7 and losing 11 games

Geoff Ridgway opened the way for the appointment of George (Pie) Lewis as coach. A former Footscray player, Pie offered as new players to the club his son Ian and a friend John (Jock) Bendall, neither of whom were bankers. The committee established that up to three non bankers could play, admitting Ian and Jock. Neville Elvish was recruited from Benalla and the on field performances improved markedly.

It was of interest to note that the VAFA “The Amateur” football magazine was utilised for communication by clubs to their players. A typical example was in the 24 August 1957 edition stating: ‘ANZ players are reminded of the ‘chin wag’ to be held after the match today. Venue is Brian Christensen home. Play is from 5.30 to stretcher time. Bring your own thirst”.

1958 Section “E”

Finished Home and Away 3^rd of 10 teams winning 10 and losing 8 games.

Team were runners up in “E” Section scoring 10 goals 13 behinds 73 points to  St Kilda CBC Old Collegians 12 goals 14 behinds 86 points.

Promoted to Section “D” for 1959

Enthusiastic Keith Metcalf’s efforts off the field were augmented by recruiting Bernie Henderson (Brother of Collingwood’s John Henderson), Ray Spencer, Harry Black and others who, when added to the 1957 talent went to make a fine team.

An excellent year culminated in a grand final loss to St Kilda CBC Old Collegians.

About this time the Staff Social Club suggested end of year challenges against the South Australians. The ladies Basketball Team travelled with the Football Club to challenge the Adelaide teams in their respective sports. Return engagements were held in Melbourne at the Mt Evelyn sports ground. These were not picnic events, being played in strenuous spirit and with a few serious injuries.

Another ‘social’ match after the grand final was ANZ Bank Football Club versus other ANZ’ers. The latter included John Henderson  (Collingwood FC). The others won a spirited but good natured outing. One benefit from that match was to recruit Jim Paton to the club. Jim was a senior executive in the bank and he generated interest in the club among its more senior officers.

1959 Section “D”

Finished 7^th of 10 Teams, winning 7, drawn 1 and losing 10 games

Jim Paton became President . Home ground transferred to Oval 10 Albert Park in very basic changing rooms, adjacent to the then Middle Park railway station (where tennis courts now stand).

Loss of several key players led to an indifferent year on field.

1960 Section “D”

Significant changes included the coaching appointment of Alan Thynne, a banker and ex Carlton player with a successful coaching background in the Federal League.

Training was at the home ground at Middle Park. At this time we developed a close relationship with Carl Pettinato, licensee of the Middle Park hotel. Club gear was stored in a large trunk in Carl’s garage. After training the Six O’clock closing liquor law was overcome when training gear was returned. Middle Park Hotel was the after match watering hole and the scene of many presentation dinners.

Alan Thynne’s wife Val was an accomplished musician and there were many after match “sing a long” sessions at their home. In this time the words of our first club song “Beat ‘em all” were put together.

During the presidency of Eric Black we saw many of the bank’s Victorian executives supporting our home games, with an occasional generous gesture on the bar after a good win!

Support for The Club was growing both on and off the field and it was decided to enter a Reserves side in the following year’s competition. There were a lot of ANZ Bank (and other Bank) guys living at a Boarding Home in Motherwell Street Hawksburn and this proved to be a recruiting place for such stalwarts as Bruce Robertson and the nucleus of the notorious and extremely ‘fun loving’ Allambee Avenue boys

1962 Section “D”

Finished 7^th of 10 Teams, winning 7 and losing 11 games

Reserves finished 9^th of 10 Teams, winning 3 and losing 13 games

Brian Christensen was third in Section “D” Reserve grade Best and Fairest

Saw the establishment of the reserves team in 1962. Brian Christensen was captain/coach. This was a brave venture given that the banks were open Saturdays until 11.00am and the side was to be on the field by 12.00noon. With players working at suburban branches, the club sometimes struggled to get the minimum 16 players afield at noon (occasionally with inventive counting). However it was deemed an essential part of the club’s future and Geoff Ridgway captain/coached the reserves for the succeeding years 1963 and 1964.

Hugh Dickson was once again in charge of First Aid and showed great club spirit at matches and training sessions

1963 Section “D”

Finished 8^th of 10 Teams, winning 6 and losing 12 games

Reserves were runners up to St.Bernards 8.16 to 3.11

This year saw our home ground transfer from Middle Park to Flinders Park Batman Avenue. It was a very central location, with dual changing facilities, which also serviced old Scotch Collegians at their adjacent oval. Despite some shortcomings in the facilities such as coldness generated from open mesh windows and door etc this was a very convenient location which served us well until 1978 when there were plans to completely re develop this quarter of Melbourne. We would therefore ultimately give way to the building of the Rod Laver Tennis Arena, which is now situated on this hallowed turf, and move back to Albert Park, which would prove to be a long term tenancy for The Club.

Whilst at Flinders Park The Club prospered, due largely to the efforts of long term Treasurer Keith Findlay and a string of very capable long serving Presidents such as Geoff Ridgway and Bruce Robertson. Training Lights (a luxury in this era) were erected, at what seemed like an enormous cost, and we were the envy of other sporting bodies at Flinders Park.

We were fortunate to gain the services of two very competent first aid professionals Noel Adams (first aid) and Rex McNamarra (masseur). Noel and Rex were to give many years of excellent service to the club and Noel’s forays onto the ground on some freezing cold days with a bottle of Green Ginger wine to warm the players was a welcome contribution.

I feel that Noel’s contribution to The Club, was possibly greater than The Club’s contribution to Noel’s career. Noel worked for Vic Rail and was able to arrange a couple of end of season trips which ended up in The Club almost being banned from the Railways.

Although precise information on number of games played is not available for individual players during these early times to the end of their careers it has been confirmed that the following players achieved significant milestones:

1964 Section “D”

Finished 7^th of 10 Teams, winning 6 and losing 12 games

Win Hambly was third in Section “D” Best and Fairest voting

Reserves were runners up to North Melbourne CBC, winning 18 matches but following a draw (3.9 each) they lost the replay 7.7 to 6.6

Les Addison was second and Geoff Ridgway third in Section “D” Reserves Best and Fairest voting

There were some wonderful social groups such as the Red Bluff boys and the Allambee Avenue crew that provided great support on and off the field during the 1960/70’s. Groups such as these typified the wonderful spirit that the club always held so dear during the early years and endeared itself well into the future.

There were many memorable times such as Peter Treleaven’s renditions of “Satchmo”, Birdie Pearson’s of Tommy Steel’s “Where’s the Birdie” (hence the nickname) and countless others, Rod Halcombe turning up to play in a dinner suit  after the ball. Players threw open their houses to accommodate the after game parties and Allambee Avenue became a focal point for The Club during these years. Allambee Avenue was home to around 10 fun loving supporters and players such as Peter Ward, Rod Andrews, Peter Anstee, ‘Podge’ Bryant, to name a few.

From time to time Club’s require good legal counsel. We were most fortunate to have the services, both on and off the field, of David Miles. David was not only a very serviceable backman but a very astute and successful lawyer. David was instrumental in rewriting our constitution and willingly donated his legal expertise when called upon for many years, during and after his retirement from playing. David went on to be the president of the Law Institute.

1965 Section “D”

Finished 8^th winning 7 and losing 11 games

Reserves finished 3^rd winning 12 and losing 6 games

1966 Section “D”

Finished 10^th, winning 1 and losing 17 games

Reserves finished 3^rd, winning 13 and losing 5 games

John Parkes was 2^nd (29gls) and John Bloom 3^rd (24gls) in Section “D” Reserves Goal Kicking

1967 Relegated to Section “E”

Finished 6^th winning 9 and losing 7 games

Reserves finished on top winning 16 and losing 2 games but lost to Old Trinity in the Grand Final 7.11 to 14.9

John Penhale was 2^nd and Neville Rattray 5^th in “D” Reserve grade Best and Fairest voting

1968 Section “E”

Finished 4^th winning 11 and losing 7 games

Reserves finished 5^th winning 10 and losing 6 games

1967 and 1968 arguably saw the fittest ANZ teams in the history of the club take the field under the commando style training and prohibition rules imposed by Coach Neville Elvish. During 1967 to 1969 the Club enjoyed reasonable success without clinching that elusive premiership flag.

1969 Section “E”

Finished 2^nd winning 14 and losing 4 games

Peter O’Sullivan was 2^nd in Section “E” Best and Fairest voting and with 79goals was 2^nd in Section “E” Goal Kicking, with John Bloom 3^rd (45goals) and W (Jet) Jackson 10^th (39goals)

Reserves finally won that elusive PREMIERSHIP for The Club after finishing the Home and Away games in 3^rd position winning 13 and losing 3 games. The Grand Final Flag was achieved with a 10.6 to 6.12 win over Brunswick

The report in the ANZ Bank social magazine “SC.R.A.P.” summed up the win as follows:

“ A magnificent team effort last Saturday enabled the Reserves to win The Club’s first Premiership flag after 16 years since inauguration. With a strong breeze blowing across the ground, we began only fairly, and our only goals for the quarter came from two fine angle shots by Des Shady and Bill Neumann. The second quarter was similar to the first and only two more goals were added by Alan Lawrence and Nev Rattray to make our score four goals one behind to three goals nine behinds at half time. When play resumed the bank side showed a lot more fire and determination and added five goals three behinds to Brunswick’s two goals. From half way through the last quarter the result was never in doubt and we maintained our lead to win handsomely to the extreme delight of our supporters. Best Players Dave King, Bill Stevens, Alan Lawrence, Col Lyons, Mirco Debelak, Ivan Wild and 14 others”.

This was probably the most successful year to date for The Club on the field and unfortunately a cruel blow was dealt around the final home and away game when Peter O’Sullivan came down with a serious knee injury. This injury saw the end to a spectacular, but short, career with The Club. Peter had played football in the South Australian Interstate Amateur team and was a champion ‘bloke’ and footballer. Peter was sorely missed from the finals team. ANZ had been early favourites, but could not cover Peter’s loss and went down in both finals matches played.

The Reserves Grand Final against traditional rivals Brunswick was a hard fought affair and it was a great team effort that saw us home on the day. The celebrations went on for many years.

At the completion of the season The ES&A Bank Football Club merged with the ANZ Bank Football Club. As with the merger of both bank businesses the name ANZ Bank prevailed.

ANZ and the E.S.&A. both played  in “E” Grade this year and details of their on field encounter during the year is incorporated in the E.S.&A. History section of this document.

Jack Pitts retired after playing 132 very gutsy games. An excerpt from the  10 Sept 1969 ANZ Bank staff magazine typifies Jack Pitts contribution to The Club: ”Jack Pitts suffered a nasty knock racing towards the sticks to save a certain goal, he collided with the goal post. He got up to take his kick before being taken to the Alfred Hospital to have his wounds stitched”.

1971 Section “E”

Football Clubs, by their nature, often possess “quiet achievers” who with great modestly go about the club achieving football success and/or assisting in the running of The Club without seeking any fanfare or fuss. Quite often choosing not to seek a committee position, or executive position, for various personal reasons. The Life Members are all such people, however sometimes someone such as Ian (Sam) Laird slips through the Life Member net. Sam was the Seniors Best and Fairest player in 1968 and gave several valuable years as a player on the wing before retiring and becoming the regular boundary umpire for several seasons until stricken down with cancer. He passed away at far too young an age (in his late 30’s). A perpetual trophy was named in his honour and was awarded for many years until The Club changed its name in 1999. We make mention and thank all Clubmen, such as Sam, without whom, clubs such as ours could not survive

1973 Section “E”

Reserves gained The Club’s second PREMIERSHIP finishing 1st winning 15 and losing 3 matches. Grand final Scores ANZ 11.11 to Old Geelong 9.14

Great Committees make great Club’s and the administrative and financial achievements made by Bruce Robertson and Keith Findlay (who ran a Little Tatts competition throughout the ANZ Bank network) set The Club throughout the 1960/1970’s.

The excellent results achieved on the field and off in 1974 in particular were also a culmination of several years of dedicated hard work from a very solid, stable and popular coaching panel in Colin Bourke in the Seniors and Jim Kelly in the Reserves. Jim was an Ex ES&A footballer who joined ANZ after the two banks merged.

On top of all this The Club was able to boast having the most professional Trainer teams in the VAFA in Noel Adams (First Aid/Medical) and Rex McNamara (Masseur).

1975 Section “E”

Trevor Dancer won the “E” Grade Goal Kicking award with 70 goals

Reserves finished 3^rd winning 13 and losing 4 matches

1976 Section “E”

Finished 4^th winning 10 and losing 7 games

Trevor Dancer again won the “E” Grade Goal Kicking award with 81 goals

Reserves finished 4^th winning 12 and losing 6 matches

Steve May finished 4^th in the “E” Reserves goal kicking with 33 goals

Trevor Dancer was a tower of strength on the forward line during seasons 1973 to 1976. Trevor was an excellent mark and kick who was consistent and unruffled on and off the field.

1977 Section “E”

Gordon Towan finished 1^st in the Section “E” Best and Fairest voting

Reserves finished 6^th winning 7 and losing 9 matches

Gordon Towan was a stand out champion in section “E” and furthered his career playing several seasons at Coburg in the VFA and playing some games with Collingwood seniors.

1978 Section “E”

This season would see The Club return to Albert Park (oval 15)

1978 Marked the 25^th season of the ANZ Bank Football Club and it is a good time to reflect back on the Honour Roll of Presidents, Secretaries, Coaches, Captains, Best and Fairest players and in Particular the Life Members listing. Each and every one of these dedicated stalwarts played an important role in seeing The Club through to such an important milestone and positioning The Club as it moved towards and into the 21^st Century.

The next few years were to be extremely tough for the club and it took a dedicated band of long term members such as W (Jet) Jackson (President) and Kevin Wescott (Secretary) to see the club through.

Saw the club return to Albert Park, firstly to oval 15. Again the club rooms were fairly basic, but this was to be the forerunner of a long association with the Albert Park Trust, with steadily improved facilities and, in later years, other ANZ sporting activities coming to join our identity there.

1979 Section “E”

After some tough years for the ANZ teams on the field, it was great to see some success in Harry Birkenfelds goal kicking prowess. Harry would go on, with his wife Karen, to be a tower of strength with The Club for years to come.

1984 Section “F”

ANZ continued to be the “kicking board” of the competition although the excellent team spirit never faltered and great comradeship was evident on and off the field.

It was always a battle to find Timekeepers, Boundary Umpires and Goal Keepers. The efforts of the likes of the ever reliable and flamboyant (though occasionally controversial) Archie Ellis behind the sticks were critical to the running of The Club. Boundary umpire positions often fell to the players children such Rodney Jackson (son of Jet) and Michael Pearson (son of Birdie).

1985 Section “F”

Harry Birkenfelds finished 1^st in “F” Reserve Best and Fairest

For all the hard work the Players and Committee put into the club, the 1980’s proved to be an extremely disappointing era as far as on field success was concerned. It was difficult to recruit new players and there was a constant battle to field two sides.

Long term players such as W (Jet) Jackson retired after amassing a mammoth club record total of 340 games and 285 goals. Neville (Birdie) Pearson retired after playing his 252^nd game (108 goals).

Harry Birkenfelds reached the 200 game mark (292 goals) as did Warren Tuckey 203 games (96 Goals).

The spirit at the club remained strong and it was a time where a dedicated band of workers on the committee held the club together. Tom Brain and his wife Linda, Harry Birkenfelds and wife Karen, W (Jet) Jackson and wife Bev, Kevin Wescott, Neil Franklin, John Fyffe, Chris Riley to name a few.

1987 Section “F”

Finished 11^th winning 2 and losing 16 games

Reserves finished 8^th winning 5 and losing 13 matches

The facilities for the players and supporters had always been very primitive up to this stage. Kevin Mitchell (ANZ Bank Staff Club Secretary/Manager) a great supporter of The Club put forward a very ambitious suggestion that involved seeking sole control of the building housing the change rooms etc from the Albert Park Trust and renovating the facilities to better cater for the players and spectators. Kevin’s vision also included transferring the ANZ Bank Cricket Club from Fawkner Park to utilise the oval and facilities during the Summer Cricket Season. With the assistance of Harry Birkenfelds, who was at the time working in the ANZ Bank Property Department, Kevin and Harry drew up plans in an endeavour to put this dream! into reality. Harry made sure The Club received great deals on construction and Kevin successfully lobbied the Staff Club committee to provide the necessary funding of $80,000 (which was an enormous sum of money in those days and would have purchased a substantial home in a suburb such as Glen Waverley). The finished project provided excellent player (and umpire) facilities, as well as under cover viewing and seating for supporters, timekeepers and catering volunteers. This was of great benefit for the likes of our long term supporter/life member Alan Heany, who never missed a game for so many years and was always a welcome sight rugged up in his traditional hat and gaberdine overcoat.

The ANZ Bank Soccer Club who played on a nearby soccer ground also utilised the facilities which became somewhat of an ANZ sporting complex. The Football Club recruited several fine players from the cricket club as did the Cricket Club from the football club to their mutual benefit.

The impressive improvements made The Club popular with opposing teams for food and after match drinks, which in turn, generated extra funds from sales and raffles.

Due to the Grand Prix starting in 1996 we would be later forced to relinquish this most popular site and move to the Beaurepaire Pavilion to make way for the Grand Prix Pit area.

1988 Section “F”

Finished 9^th winning 4 and losing 14 games

Reserves finished 9^th winning 5 and losing 13 matches

A (Tony) Trimboli resigned as President for personal reasons during the year and Harry Birkenfelds assumed the role for the remainder of the season

1989 Section “F”

Finished 8^th winning 9 and losing 9 games

Michael Szeitz finished 4^th in the Section “F” goal kicking

Reserves finished 6^th winning 10 and losing 8 matches

Harry Birkenfelds continued as President and was ably supported by Secretary Tom Brain and Committee.

Michael Szeitz gave the team a target to kick to up forward and The Club started to win a share of matches. There was a feeling of optimism that The Club had turned the corner.

1990 Section “F”

Finished 3^rd winning 15 and losing 3 games

Michael Szeitz finished 2^nd in the Section “F” goal kicking with 88 goals

Reserves finished 5th winning 10 and losing 8 matches

Michael Xuereb finished 2^nd in the Section “F” Reserves grade goal kicking with 36 goals

Harry Birkenfelds and his wife Karen had been tireless workers for the club for many years and the results of Harry’s efforts as President since 1988 were starting to bear fruit. A band of quality players were recruited through the 1990’s to add to the regular stalwarts. Names that readily spring to mind were Jack McDonald, Michael Szeitz, Paul Boyle, Peter Marshall, Manny Nicolosi, Peter Smith, Jim Sutton, Tony Kennedy

1991 Section “F”

Finished 1^st after Home and Away games winning 17 and losing 1 game

Jack McDonald finished first in the Section “F” Best and Fairest voting

Manny Nicolosi finished 2^nd in the Section “F” goal kicking with 67 goals

Reserves finished 1st after Home and Away games winning 14 and losing 4 matches

This was the most successful season ever for the ANZ Bank Football Club and after absolutely thrashing Elsternwick in the seasons previous encounters high hope were held for a premiership. It is too painful to recount the incredible run of misfortunes that plagued us during the Grand Final game and the incredible run of good luck that went Elsternwick’s way. It was a tearful end, when at the final siren, the scoreboard read ANZ 13 goals 16 behinds to Elsternwick 15 goals 14 behinds. And although the Reserves failed to make the Grand Final and therefore no Premierships were achieved from a season that promised so much, we must never forget  what a magnificent achievement it was for a club, that was down and almost out during all of the 1980’s, to finish runners-up and achieve promotion from “F” grade to “E” grade.

1992 Section “E”

A reasonable result considering the promotion to “E” grade.

1993 Section “E”

The VAFA introduced three “E” sections this season in lieu of an “F” section. The new structure being “E South”, “E Central” and “E East”. ANZ Bank was in the “E South” section

HISTORY OF THE E.S.&A. BANK FOOTBALL CLUB FROM INAUGURATION TO MERGER WITH THE ANZ BANK FOOTBALL CLUB

1932-1935

E.S.&A. Bank Football Club was first formed in the VAFA in 1932 playing in “D” Grade and over four years progressed to the “A” Grade in 1935

During these years The Club had a number of very good players such as Roy Scott, Ted Turner and Fenton Law (who managed to kick over 100 goals in a season on a number of occasions)

1936-1937

During this period “The Club” played in “B” Grade under the joint names of National Bank – E.S.&A.

1938

The VAFA records show no reference to E.S.&A. and National Bank continuing in the competition

1939-1945

The team did not play during the war years

1945-1952

After the war a directive was issued from the Bank’s Administration to reform the sporting clubs.

The then Social Secretary, Alan Mierisch, in conjunction with Roy Gumley and Staff Department contacted pre war players and interested parties in Melbourne Office (388 Collins Street) and Royal Bank Branch (293 Collins Street) and arranged training and practice games at Princess Park Carlton. Eventually a team was formed in 1952 to play in “D” Grade VAFA

Captain Alan Tepper and Coach Bob MacAsey fielded a team of young and older players and one or two from NSW who had played only Rugby. An adventurous season, that slowly improved, winning a few and losing a lot.

1953

By 1953 the team had gained more exposure and recruited genuine footballers who took the team into the Grand Final finishing Runners up and progressing to “C” Grade in 1954.

1954-1955

Team remained in “C” Grade

1956

Recruited Bill Deans, ex Melbourne Football Club Premiership player as coach

Don Hoffman won the VAFA Best and Fairest for “C” Grade

1957

Runners up in Grand Final after finishing 4^th in the Home and Away matches and promoted to “B” Grade. Grand Final scores were E.S.&A. 8 goals 9 behinds 57 points defeated by Old Geelong Grammarians 11 goals 10 behinds 76 points.

Best E.S.&A. players were: Melling, Poore, Page, Whitting, Faull (2 goals), McCluskey.

A Faull finished 3^rd in  Section “C” Goal Kicking (51 goals).

D Hoffman finished 4^th in Section “C” grade Best & Fairest.

Grand Final Team was:

E.S.&A. finished 11^th on ladder.

The ANZ Bank and the E.S.&A. Bank football clubs both played in section “E” in 1969 and on 21 June 1969 the ANZ Bank Team 7 goals 16 behinds 58 points defeated the E.S.&A. Bank Team 8 goals two behinds 50 points. ANZ Bank Best Players: Cooke, Rattray, Gilroy-Scott, Williams, Penhale, Whiteman. E.S.&A. Best Players: Walsh, Gray, Ford (4 goals) Joyce, Martin.

Following completion of this season the two teams merged into ANZ Bank Football Club.

A very small number of E.S.&A. players continued with the merged teams, one of whom, Jim Kelly went on to play with and coach the merged organisation Football Team.
