anzroc Xmas lunch Dec 8 2011

PRESIDENTS OPENING COMMENTS

MC Kevin Mitchell opened this excellent luncheon with an array of jokes that kept the audience laughing he then introduced President Neville Pearson to members present. Neville welcomed 283 members (including 26 women members) and guests to the Annual Christmas Luncheon with a special welcome to ANZ Group Executives, Mike Smith CEO, Graham Hodges Deputy CEO, Alistair Currie, Group Chief Operating Officer, Peter Marriott CFO, Susie Babani, GMD Human Resources, and National Manager of ANZ Staff Clubs, Christopher Woods.

ANZ Executives Phil Chronican, Shayne Elliott, Anne Weatherstone, Chris Page, Joyce Phillips, and Paul Edwards were unable to attend and sent their apologies.

Neville Pearson was especially pleased to see past ANZ Chief’s Charles Rennie and Will Bailey in attendance and thanked the large number of country members who took the time to travel to Melbourne this year. We were also able to welcome Elina Law to the luncheon as Elina is still helping Eamon Veaney with our ANZROC website.

In his opening comments Neville acknowledged ANZROC‘s appreciation for ANZ Bank’s ongoing support through the generous subsidies for annual luncheons in all States and the use of ANZ Pavilion for the ANZROC Vic luncheon.

In proposing the Toast to Queen and Country Neville recited his second ANZROC Christmas Poem:

“LONG SPEECHES CAUSE THE MIND TO ROAM OR SO IT HAS BEEN SAID

SO I HAVE PENNED A SHORTISH POEM TO READ TO YOU INSTEAD

ON BEHALF OF THE COMMITTEE I WELCOME ALL OF YOU TODAY

WITH A SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL OUR MEMBERS WHO TRAVELLED FROM FAR AWAY

OUR BANKS SUPPORT OVER THE YEARS CANNOT BE OVER STATED

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

TOAST TO ANZ

Wendy Black in proposing the toast to ANZ gave members present a thumbnail sketch of her lifetime in ANZ from childhood as the daughter of a Bank of Australasia Manager growing up in country Victoria through her years in ANZ beginning as a junior officer and rising to Executive Assistant to a number of senior executives in ANZ several of whom were in the audience. Wendy spoke fondly of her marriage to Eric Black who at the time was an Executive in the bank and she recounted the changes she experienced over the years she was working within the top levels of ANZ. Undoubtedly the many anecdotes about her life spent in the banking community were from the heart and many members were reminded of their time in the Bank working with colleagues who have become lifelong friends. The toast was acknowledged with enthusiasm.

CEO’S RESPONSE TO THE TOAST

This was CEO Mike Smith’s fifth address to the Retired Officers Christmas Lunch and he was pleased to update members with the year’s results and the strategic direction ANZ is taking into 2012.

Despite the impact of the European crisis across the world Mike said that ANZ’s progress towards the strategic ambition of becoming a leading super regional bank in Asia Pacific is on target. The continuing acquisition of selected Asian assets and integration of other businesses acquired in Asia is ongoing but solid profits are now flowing from this source. Regional expansion continues with approval received for new or expanded banking licences SE Asia including China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, the Philippines and now operating in India after an absence of many years. Closer to home profits were at record levels and dividends sharply higher and a strong focus on balance sheet management enables ANZ to maintain its ranking as one of the world’s top credit rated banks. Looking ahead there is still uncertainty in the global environment particularly USA and European economies and higher funding costs are here to stay so some shift in importance to raising local deposits is high on management’s agenda in 2012. Mike thanked the members present for their ongoing loyalty and support for ANZ and wished all ANZROC members and families all the best for Christmas and a very prosperous new year.

Bob Nichol 100th celebration

"Bob Nichol enjoyed a wonderful celebration on 15th November for the
occasion of his 100th birthday
ANZROC was represented by Ron Adams, Harry Carrodus, Neville Pearson and
Bruce Sanderson. It was a most enjoyable afternoon and Bob's memory is
amazing, as is his ability to read without glasses. Neville Pearson recited
a poem briefly covering Bob's first 100 years. A framed copy, which included
some of Bob's paintings in the background, was presented on behalf of the
ANZROC members
Bob enjoys visits from ANZROC members at the 40 Dorking Road Box Hill
retirement village and I have found that between 10.00am and 11.00am is a
good time for a visit"

YOU LEARNED VERY QUICKLY IN A FAMILY OF EIGHT

SCHOOLS IN ESSENDON, FRANKSTON AND MONT ALBERT WERE SWELL

THEN TO MELBOURNE HIGH SCHOOL WHERE HE PERFORMED REALLY WELL

QUALIFIED FOR MELBOURNE UNI AS HE HAD MADE AN IMPRESSION

THOUGH THE BANK OF AUSTRALASIA PREVAILED AS ‘TWAS IN THE “ DEPRESSION”

MELBOURNE, TALLANGATTA THEN BACK TO THE CITY

BOB MARRIED MAY PERMAN, SHE WAS EVER SO PRETTY

FOUR DAUGHTERS FOLLOWED BUT NEVER A BOY

BUT OH! HOW BOB’S DAUGHTERS BROUGHT THE FAMILY SUCH JOY

BOB HAD TRIED HIS HAND AT CRICKET AND TENNIS

WAS GENTLE AND KIND AND SHOWED NO REAL MENACE

THE WAR WAS UPON US, BOB JOINED UP OF COURSE

SERVED IN NEW GUINEA WITH THE AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE

BACK TO BANKING IN SALE, ECHUCA THEN MANAGER WYNYARD

WHILE bob was MANAGER CARLTON THEY THREW in A NEW CARD

HEAD UP THE NEW BANK EDUCATION TEAM HE WAS TOLD

A JOB TO SUIT BOB UNTIL 60 YEARS OLD

RETIRED ON HIS BIRTHDAY AND HE COULD NOT WAIT

AN OVERSEAS CRUISE BECKONED WITH his LOVE ‘MAY’ AS HIS DATE

ENCOURAGED BY THE WONDERFUL THINGS THAT THEY SAW

THEY DECIDED THEY WOULD EACH YEAR TRAVEL SOME MORE

THE FAMILY WERE BUSY THEY COULD NOT WAIT

AND WHILE THEY WERE TRAVELIING THE GRAND KIDS NUMBERED EIGHT

IN NINTEEN EIGHTY SEVEN AFTER MAY SO SADLY DEPARTED

BOB’S INTEREST IN DRAWING AND WRITING KICK STARTED

Something bob managed to do fairly well

Was work a computer and play games like free cell

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY MATTERS BOB ALWAYS DID TREASURE

SUCH AS CHURCH, PROBUS AND ART ALL GAVE SO MUCH PLEASURE

CONGRATULATIONS BOB FOR MAKING THE TON

Traralgon golf day November 2011

Thanks again to John Brown and David Woods for organising another splendid event. 42 members and partners went to Traralgon, 28 to play golf and the others to shop see a movie or have a massage at the hotel. In contrast to the past couple of years we enjoyed perfect weather the afternoon being sunny and 28 degrees. Just as well we didn't play the next day with strong Northerly winds and upwards of 33 degrees. Watching the professionals struggle in the President's Cup I don't know how we would have fared in such conditions.

The winner of the inaugural President's trophy was Eamon Veaney with a score of 41 points, the runner-up was Bob Irvine with 39. The Ladies winner with 28 points was Lesley Cooke and runner-up Kathy Trace. Seeing that Eamon also won at Spring Valley earlier in the year achieving the 'anzroc grand slam' for 2011 John Brown told him that his handicap would be reduced by at least 2 shots in 2012 regardless of what his club handicap said.

John Winders was also presented with the final Jim Coffey memorial trophy which he had won at the 2010 event.

The dinner was the usual tasty roast prepared by Margo who has decided to cut down on her catering commitments in the future and will concentrate on funerals as they cause less work !!! We will miss her excellent food and no nonsense approach to life.
